My Week in St. Charles MO with the Chevy Volt

I was fortunate to be able to drive the Chevy Volt for a week, courtesy of the great folks at Gastorf Chevrolet.

With my job the Chevy Volt seems like a perfect car for both my business and personal needs. I own my own marketing company, and the majority of my customers are in St. Charles county and West or North St. Louis County. I also get to work out of my home office, and meet with my clients at their businesses, or at coffee shops and restaurants in St. Charles and St. Louis Counties.

My driving typically ranges between 10 and 45 miles per day. Most days I drive 30 miles or less. So I was really excited to give the Chevy Volt a try since it can go about the fist 40 miles on electric charge before having to use gas.

Day 1 – picked up the Chevy Volt and drove to my house in St. Charles, MO. I decided to drive until the electric charge was used up so that I could test day 2 on gas.

Day 2 – drove to client and business meetings in St. Charles, using gas the entire day.

Day 3 – drove to client and business meetings in St. Charles and West St Louis County – all on the electric charge.

Day 4 – drove to the Clayton / Richmond Heights area to run errands and each lunch. I used up the electric charge and drove the last 2 miles on gas.

Day 5 – drove to St. Louis County to run errands and to each lunch – all on the electric charge.

Day 6 – drove to Ballwin to play in the West County Chamber golf tournament – all on the electric charge.

Day 7 – drove to client and business meetings in St. Charles, using electric the entire day.

Day 8 – drove to client and business meetings in St. Charles and West St Louis County – all on the electric charge.

Day 9 – drove to a client meeting in St. Charles, then to Warrenton to return the Chevy Volt to Gastorf Chevrolet – I used up the electric charge and drove the last mile on gas.

The final results for the week: 419.1 Miles – 1.1 Gallons of Gas. Almost all of the gas was because I decided to drive day 2 on Gas and not electric, so realistically I would have used less than a half gallon of gas!

The Chevy Volt is a very nice car. It handles great, acceleration is good, and there is a decent amount of space though the back seat is pretty cramped for adult passengers. It worked perfectly for my lifestyle, supporting both my business and personal needs. Most importantly to me, I found out that I could use the Chevy Volt almost entirely on electric, but had the convenience of a conventional gas tank if I had to drive more than 35 miles before I could recharge the electric battery!

2102 Chevy Volt Test Drive St. Charles MO

The Chevy Volt drives like a regular car because it is a regular car. It has a gas engine that holds 9.3 gallons of gas.

What makes the Chevy Volt really amazing is that the first 35-40 miles you drive it are powered by its electric battery – driving gas free! Then after the electric battery charge is used up, it seamlessly converts to gas.

Imagine paying $1.50 per day to drive your car 35-40 miles per day!

When I started my week long test drive of the 2012 Chevy Volt, I drove from Gastorf Chevrolet in Warrenton MO to my home in St. Charles MO. I made it to my house without using any gas (37 miles). I decided to drive it to dinner to see what happens when the electric charge is used up. The only change I noticed was the cool display change on the dashboard – there was no noticeable change in the performance of the Volt.

The dashboard display shows a green battery display while driving on the electrical charge, and a blue gas pump display when driving on gas. It shows you your total driving range (electric plus gas) so that you know how far you can drive before you either have to refill or recharge the Chevy Volt.

I work in St. Charles, and most of my clients are either in St. Charles or West St. Louis County. So I was excited to see how the Chevy Volt would work for me in my normal business / personal use.

The first day I had the Chevy Volt, I drove it on gas. I just wanted to get a feel for the performance of the car and what kind of gas mileage it gets. Granted I’m not a car expert, but I really liked the way it handled and accelerated. The gas mileage was good too – over 35 MPG. I drove about 25 miles that day – so I would have easily been able to just use the electric battery power if it was charged.

Since driving the first day on gas, I’ve been able to use the electric battery almost exclusively! I’ve been able to drive to Creve Coeur and back easily on electric. I also drove to the Galleria area and back and only used 0.03 gallons of gas. So I drove 39 miles on 0.03 gallons of gas at an estimated cost of $0.35 for gas.

Not only have I been able to eliminate most of the gas that I would normally use, I can feel good about the fact that I’ve reduced my pollution too!

Gastorf Chevrolet Is Ready to Play Ball with Wright City Parks Ball Program

Gastorf Chevrolet to provide Wright City Parks Ball Program with new equipment, monetary donation and instructional clinics as Part of National Chevrolet Youth Baseball Program

Warrenton, March 2, 2012 – Gastorf Chevrolet is partnering with the Wright City Parks Ball Program in Wright City. Gastorf Chevrolet has joined forces with the national Chevrolet Youth Baseball program to provide new equipment, instructional clinics, a monetary donation and an opportunity to raise an additional $10,000 through a Chevrolet vehicle sweepstakes. The program kicks off March 1 and runs through July 15, 2012.

Youth baseball provides positive and productive life lessons for young people across America, and the Chevrolet Youth Baseball program is an extension of Chevrolet’s commitment to baseball, community and families. Gastorf Chevrolet is bringing that same dedication to youth baseball.

“There is nothing more American than Chevrolet and baseball and Gastorf Chevrolet wants to combine America’s favorite brand and favorite pastime together for our families in Warren County to enjoy,” said Doug Nordwald of Gastorf Chevrolet.

The Chevrolet Youth Baseball program is beginning its seventh year, and has helped raise more than $13 million to aid local teams, affecting more than 2.7 million young people in communities where Chevrolet’s customers live, work and play. This year, about 1,600 Chevrolet dealers are participating.

Gastorf Chevrolet will present the Wright City Parks Ball Program with 10 new equipment kits complete with equipment bags, baseball buckets, whiffle balls, hitting net, batting tees and Chevrolet Youth Baseball T-shirts. The sponsorship also includes youth clinics featuring former MLB/MiLB players and coaches and instructors from Ripken Baseball.

In addition, Gastorf Chevrolet will present a check representing a one-time monetary donation to Wright City Parks Ball Program. The team also will have an opportunity to raise additional funds through a Chevrolet Youth Baseball Fund-raiser. Sponsored leagues across the country will each receive 2,000 fund-raiser entry tickets to distribute for a suggested donation, and each league will keep 100 percent of the proceeds it raises. At the end of the fund-raiser, five winners – one from each region – will win the Chevrolet Equinox or Chevrolet Cruze vehicle of their choice. Each participating market will award a secondary prize of a television and Blu-Ray player.

In addition to its commitment to youth baseball, Chevrolet also is the Official Vehicle of Major League Baseball™.

October is Car Care Month

October is a big transition month, so it’s a great time to take care of your car, truck, or SUV. Temperatures change and we see the beginning of colder weather. We also love to take drives to see the beautiful fall colors. And of course the holidays are right around the corner!

Here are some simple Car Care Tips from AAA

Regular oil changes are the single most important thing you can do to extend the life of your car’s engine. Engine Oil:

provides lubrication for your engine

captures dirt and metal

helps cool the engine

Over time the engine oil effectiveness is reduced.
Proper inflation pressure is the single most important factor in extending tire life. Tire maintenance is also an important safety factor. For proper tire inflation pressure:

Check frequently – at least once a month and before long trips

Use a high quality guage

Follow inflation pressures in your owner’s manual – also commonly found on a decal in the driver side door

Check when the tires are cold

When towing or carrying a load, consider increasing tire inflation pressure

According to AAA, here are the “Top Five Car Care Do’s That Don’t Get Done”
1. Over- or under-inflated tires
2. Clogged engine air filter
3. Corroded or loose battery cables/clamps/terminals
4. Inadequate supply of windshield washer fluid
5. Low and/or dirty engine oil

Tailgate Party Tips For Your Chevy Truck or SUV

Fall is officially here and that means football season is in full swing! Whether your favorite team is the Warrenton Warriors, the Missouri Tigers, or the St. Louis Rams, we love to tailgate before the game.

If you have a truck or an SUV, chances are your vehicle is, or will be, the home base for your friends and family before the game for your tailgate party.

When it comes to tailgating, there are some keys.

First, you can never take too much! Make sure you bring more food and drink than you think you will need. Also make sure you bring chairs, a tent or tarp, grill and cooking supplies and utensils, stuff to clean up and store your trash, a first aid kits, and a radio and/or TV. As the weather gets colder, make sure you bring blankets and clothing to stay warm.

Don’t forget the activities – bring a football, a Frisbee, or other game. And don’t forget the tickets!

So are the most important features of a truck or SUV for a tailgate party? First, flat surfaces are usually important and always at a premium for the tailgate party. Second, you need enough room to carry your passengers and haul your supplies. If your truck or SUV isn’t quite big enough, attach a small trailer to the hitch of your vehicle. This will also give you more flat space.

Don’t forget the audio/video and a/c power capabilities of your vehicle. Listening to the radio and watching some football on video are get ways to get pumped for the game. A/C power in the rear of the vehicle is great for lights, a crock pot, small refrigerator, and more. Don’t forget about aftermarket gadgets to add to your truck or SUV.

Chevy makes some great trucks and SUVs for tailgate parties. The Chevy Avalanche is a nice choice for passenger and cargo space. The Avalanche has some really nice features such as ability to extend the cargo box for more storage, and the rear window can be completely removed.

The Chevy Equinox again has nice capacity for passengers and cargo. It also has a great sound system that can include satellite radio. And there are 12-volt power outlets in the front, rear, and cargo areas.

Of course you can’t forget about the Chevy Silverado, Chevy Tahoe, and Chevy Suburban as other great vehicles for a tailgate party.
